Course Requirements
A provider card alone is not enough to begin teaching.
The instructor course is one step in a larger credentialing pathway. Review every requirement and confirm your Training Center or organization will accept you before paying for the course or outside materials.
- 1Choose the American Heart Association or American Red Cross pathway before purchasing materials; the provider credential, coursework, materials, and affiliation must match the pathway you plan to teach.
- 2Hold a current BLS Provider credential for the selected pathway and be able to perform every required provider-level skill proficiently.
- 3AHA candidates must be at least 18, be accepted by an AHA Training Center before enrolling, and have an Instructor Candidate Application on file with that Training Center.
- 4Complete the required online instructor coursework before the applicable in-person Instructor Essentials session and bring the completion certificate when directed.
- 5Successfully complete the one-day, in-person instructor course and all required testing or skills demonstrations.
- 6Complete required course monitoring within the timeframe established by the selected organization. AHA candidates must successfully be monitored teaching within six months of the hands-on session.
- 7Complete Training Center or Training Site alignment and any required platform registration before teaching independently or issuing course-completion credentials.
Pathway note: The purchase list shown in the investment section is for the AHA pathway. American Red Cross candidates follow Red Cross-specific requirements, materials, and pricing supplied for that pathway.

The American Heart Association and American Red Cross BLS Instructor pathways prepare qualified BLS providers to teach provider-level BLS and CPR courses. The one-day instructor course develops the skills needed to organize lessons, coach students, evaluate hands-on performance, and follow the standards of the selected training organization.
Instructor candidates must hold a current BLS Provider credential that matches the American Heart Association or American Red Cross pathway they plan to teach. Additional online coursework, monitoring, affiliation, materials, and equipment requirements also apply.
